Demand Multiple Debates Between Newby and Stivers

Newby for Congress started this petition to Rep. Steve Stivers

The people of Ohio’s 15th Congressional District deserve honesty and transparency in their leaders. They deserve to know how their Representative will advocate for them in Congress and what steps that Representative will take to move District 15 forward. With that information, every voter can make an informed decision on November 3rd.

That’s why Joel Newby is demanding multiple debates against the incumbent, Steve Stivers. Through civic engagement, voter education, and civil discussion between candidates, we make our democracy stronger and more responsible. Sign this petition to help us demand these debates.

Political advertising should NEVER replace actual face-to-face debates in our democracy. Citizens United has made political advertising a political money laundering operation, a cancer on our government.

Demanding that a candidate raise $100,000 before being allowed in a debate perpetuates Columbus' oligarchy and plutocracy. Democracy was lost in this city years ago, and it needs to be restored.

I believe that Joel, and the public, have not just a right, but a duty to hear from both candidates in a debate setting. This ensures that voting for the candidate to represent our congressional district is based on a one-on-one debate that allows voters to compare and contrast the two candidates.

A debate with you main opponent is the minimum a Congressional candidate should do. It is an opportunity for voters to make a decision based on what they see and here, not just slick mailers and party affiliation.

We need transparency. We need new ways to participate. When candidates debate, they model the appropriate way to have civil discussions. Constituents also need to see their candidates able to bring a platform to a public table.

Steve, are you afraid of your constituents? Do you only represent a chosen group of voters or donors in your district? I've near had an opportunity to meet or speak with you. I live in Williamsport Ohio. Do even know where that is located? I know Joel does. If you believe that Joel is not competitive in this race than a debate should be a cakewalk for you. Show some respect for your constituents from the other side of the aisle and debate Mr. Newby. You are after all paid to represent everyone in your district.

As a conservative, I find this disheartening. Candidates should debate each other in a respectful way, so that constituents have the most information about their candidates to make an informed decision. Joel has extensively outlined his policy platform, and it shows that Stivers is afraid to debate someone that can refute his actions while in office.

Folks in office can get too comfortable. It’s easy to do in gerrymandered districts where politicians are picking their voters. District 15 deserves accountable & transparent leadership in these unprecedented times, and a debate would help voters make informed decisions.
